Review of Metal Coil Suppliers for Rollforming and Metal Construction
Besides your rollforming machine, choosing the right coil supplier is one of the most important decisions you can make as a metal roofing panel manufacturer or contractor.
As manufacturers of premier portable rollforming machines, at New Tech Machinery (NTM), we focus on what’s important to you as an owner or operator. If you’ve recently purchased a rollformer, or you’ve had one for a while but aren’t sure what different suppliers are offering, this article is for you. If you’re established in the business and have been fabricating metal panels for years, this article is also for you, as metal colors, styles, and finishes continue to evolve, and the industry isn’t the same as it was even just a couple of years ago. So, wherever you are in your rollforming journey, read on.
What to Look for When Choosing a Coil Supplier
Metal Coil Quality
Your customers expect the best value for their money, right? Yet sometimes, customers find adhesion issues, excessive chalking, or fading with cheaper paint systems. Or oil canning appears, especially in bright sunlight. In contrast, they may discover their roof won’t need replacing until their children reach retirement age. So, coil quality really makes a difference.
Suppliers offer a wide variety of gauges and finishes, and you’ll need to decide which are worth considering. More than one option may make sense.
While oil canning can be attributed to a variety of factors, including not adjusting the roll forming machine correctly, it can also be due to the quality of the coil. Anytime you receive coil from a supplier, make sure to check for material flaws and mistakes in the order. Also, keep a close eye on the coil for defects during the fabrication process.
Delivery Convenience
Some manufacturers ship nationwide, while others have regional or state distribution centers. Therefore, the project’s timeframe may be a determinant. If you need the coil as soon as possible, you may find the closest supplier can deliver the fastest (provided they have what you need). Otherwise, national companies may offer free shipping or have a greater selection, making them worth the wait.
Supplier Selection
The availability of any coil finish really depends on your customer’s preference. If they’re looking for a black matte finish, it’s easy to acquire from most suppliers. However, your options might be more limited if they’re after a specialty print such as a woodgrain, or a less common color, or a coil outside of the typical gauges found in standing seam roofing. Some suppliers also cater to custom designs that may suit the customer’s needs. Testing may be another aspect to consider if it’s required in the project specifications.
Customer Service
The rule of thumb is that you’ll save yourself money in the long run if you pay a little extra for good customer service rather than having to fight to have an order corrected. Suppliers can be resistant to taking back an order already delivered. Developing a relationship with a supplier will make receiving quality service more likely, as they’ll value you as a regular customer.
Coil Cost
Quality costs money. If your customer has a limited budget, find the best deal possible for what they’re looking for, but discuss the advantages of more expensive options. A higher-quality PVDF paint system will hold its color and offer more aesthetic value than a less expensive SMP paint system. Also, a high-quality paint system may offer a better warranty.
Still, you should make your recommendations for the material and coil gauge, as paying a little more for a thicker gauge may be worth it even in the short term. Also, they may be eligible for LEED credits if they choose a qualifying material.
In this article, you’ll find a list of metal coil suppliers. Metal panel contractors and manufacturers often use two or three coil companies, depending on their needs. You may find one here that you can add to your list of suppliers.
Metal Coil Suppliers
This comprehensive list of coil providers is arranged alphabetically, as we’re not making recommendations but comparing what each company offers. That said, Sheffield is listed first because if you’re an NTM machine owner, there are advantages to using Sheffield as a supplier.
Sheffield Metals International
Sheffield Metals International (SMI), founded in 1997, is a sister company of New Tech Machinery. If you’re an owner of an NTM portable rollformer, Sheffield offers advantages.
“A big difference you have with Sheffield is our relationship with NTM,” said Jake Dwyer, an account manager at Sheffield Metals. “If contractors run our metal through an NTM roll former, they get full access to all of our testing and engineering, whereas other suppliers’ customers may have to get their machines certified to gain access to testing and engineering. Also, we have an effective team from warehouse to office who are readily available to help out. Our team has been able to keep our lead times to a minimum.”
Sheffield provides manufacturers and contractors with coated and bare metal sheet and coil, as well as engineered standing seam profiles. Sheffield Metals operates out of six locations throughout the United States: Sheffield Village, Ohio; Acworth, Georgia; Arlington, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Plant City, Florida; and La Mirada, California.
Sheffield has a visualizer on its website where customers, designers, and architects can upload or use sample photos to apply a variety of roof, trim, and wall panel profiles and colors.

A606 Weathering Steel
A606 is a unique steel alloy product designed to form a layer of rust when exposed to the elements. The rust serves as a protective layer that contributes to corrosion resistance. The rust layer develops a patina that transforms naturally over time. It’s a unique metal for roofing, siding, or specialized architectural projects. Notable, however, is that it does not include a warranty.
Rustic Rawhide®
CMG’s latest addition applies a printing over texture process combined with a wrinkled paint system to create a weathered metal appearance that you can use on metal roofs, siding, and for interior applications.
CMG also offers copper coil in 15”, 20”, and 24”.

The Short View
You may have already curated a list of suppliers that you’ve worked with for years. However, as the metal market continues to evolve, it doesn’t hurt to review the different offerings. With the emergence of metal board and batten siding, innovative technologies creating synthetic replications of wood and custom designs and patterns are changing the face of metal construction.
When you contact a supplier, be sure to include the following questions:
- What warranties come with your metal coil?
- What guarantees do you make for delivery?
- How do you respond to incorrect orders or defects found in the material upon delivery?
Always check your order when it arrives. Document any defects, including images and coil samples. Also, check size and thickness to make sure they matche your order. Running bad coil through a rollforming machine doesn’t make it come out right on the other end.
The important thing is finding a supplier that is reliable, provides good customer service, and has the selection and quality you need.
